🌄 On the Road Again: Journey to Calgary

Tomorrow, I’ll set off on my first adventure of the year—this time, as part of my duties as Commissioner for the United Church of Canada. I’m headed to Calgary for General Council 45, held August 7–12, 2025. After two rewarding trips last year, the prospect of another journey was too tempting to resist.

My faithful 2017 Ford Escape has once again been transformed into a mobile base of operations. It’s outfitted with everything I need for comfort and convenience: a trifold twin memory foam mattress, blackout screens, portable power, refrigeration for medications, my trusty Keurig for that one perfect morning cup, and enough gear to keep both my electronics and my wellbeing in check.

Unlike last year, I’ve decided to skip the cooking equipment and food supplies. That’s no oversight—it’s intentional. I discovered something important during those trips: I thrive on human connection. Meals aren’t just about nourishment, they’re opportunities to meet people, discover new dishes, and embrace local flavors. The foodie in me relishes the chance to explore.

This journey isn’t about isolation or roughing it. It’s about movement, discovery, and a healthy mix of campgrounds, restaurants, scenic detours, and maybe even a motel or two. While I’ve mapped out the road to Calgary (and the restful hotel stay during the Council), what comes next is a mystery I’m excited to meet head-on. Come August 12th, my next steps will be guided by curiosity, energy, and maybe even whim.

I’ve consulted my doctor, cardiologist, and family—and all agree on just one essential condition: stay in touch, preferably daily. With that, I’m ready to hit the road and see what stories await.
