GC45 Day 14

As is now the norm, the day began with a 6:30 alarm. After my morning rituals, I headed down to the magnificent breakfast spread on the 2nd floor. I was joined at my table by Mardi Tindal, former Moderator of the United Church of Canada (2009–2012). Not only was she a pleasant and enjoyable meal companion, but also a knowledgeable source on the issues we’d be facing today.

Next on my agenda was a scheduled photo shoot with the Antler River commissioners and delegate, showing off our identifying t-shirts designed by Richard Aukland for GC45. On my way out of breakfast, I ran into Shannon and Tabitha—and discovered Tabitha didn’t have a shirt. Luckily, I had an extra (XXXL) to add to her wardrobe.

The rest of the morning began with a worship service, followed by a full slate of business:

  • Presentations
  • Clarifying Questions
  • Targeted Presentations
  • Necessary Business

Then came lunch—another round of culinary delights. My sugars are taking a beating!

After lunch, we dove into our discussion groups to tackle today’s proposal agenda. I’ve been blessed with a discussion group extraordinaire:

  • Knowledgeable
  • Amiable
  • A great cultural and age cross-section
  • A marvellous discussion leader

We applied detailed energy to all issues and even finished 15 minutes ahead of schedule.

Back to Macleod Hall for the results of the third election ballot:
We now have the 45th Moderator of the United Church of CanadaRev. Dr. Kimberly Heath.

Born in Lusaka, Zambia, Dr. Heath grew up in small Canadian towns and cities. She studied history at McGill University and earned her Master of Divinity at Emmanuel College before her ordination in 1999. Her 25 years of active ministry began with the people of Claresholm-Stavely Pastoral Charge in rural southern Alberta. Since 2007, she has served the people of Wall Street United Church in eastern Ontario.

After this celebration, we were treated to a loving Youth Forum presentation, featuring individual reflections from many youth delegates and commissioners. Their presence and participation at GC45 is impressive—we have two at our table group and seven in our discussion group, all fully engaged and contributing.

Following some logistical business, we enjoyed another delicious supper and then moved into our second theme presentation. It’s difficult to convey the effectiveness of our guest presenter—her rousing and pointed message was unforgettable. I understand the United Church YouTube Channel will have it online. I’ll be watching it again.

We wrapped up with final logistical matters, a closing worship session, and then—finally—off to collapse in my room for the night.
