Mary and Keith's
Excellent Adventure
2003
July 28, 2003 - Kalso to Fort Macleod
We realized that it would be a long day if we were going to reach Fort Macleod so we started early. Twenty minutes down the road was the Balfor Ferry. We arrived 10 minutes after the ferry left so we had a 40-minute wait. Looked through the shops and had some breakfast and then we were the first on the ferry. Time it arrived there was more than a full load so some had to wait for the next voyage. This is the longest free ferry in the world with a 35-minute trip across Kooteny Lake. Where the last ferry ran on a cable this one is self powered and its sister ferry is much bigger with a coffee shop and other amenities. Once again the terrain was up and down with many twists and turns - narrow roads and sharp drop offs. Mary took it like a tropper - ferries and mountains are not her favorite things but the scenery was spectacular. The big concern all day was the fire at Crowsnest Pass. While there were many rumors the pass was open and we got through with no problems. As you will see from the pictures we were close enough to see the flames and feel the heat. It was more scary then enjoyable and we kept on trucking rather than stop and sightsee. We saw fire bombers also although we did not see then drop there load or fill up with water we did see them refueling. We had lunch at A&W and Supper at a steak house in Fort Macleod. Quite a day from Mountains to Plains - Ferries and Forest Fires plus probably the most time travelling so far. We once again have a great campsite - friendly hosts, small campground - 24 sites well serviced. Another back into site and it took me a few more tries but not a real problem. Some Thunder and a bit of rain - not much but a pleasant change from the heat we have been enjoying. By the way while I was able to keep Bob at bay with my cribbage skills Mary is making a habit of beating me two out of three games every night.
