Mary and Keith's
Excellent Adventure
2003
July 27, 2003 - Verno to Kalso
Start of the trip home. After much discussion and checking on the state of the Fires in BC and Alberta we decided to take the scenic southern route home through the Kootenies. While it looks like a day longer we have never traveled it and Bob and Kathy indicate that it is worth seeing. We leave Vernon and take Hwy. 6 South and East. While the roads are twisty and narrow and steep with large drop off's the awesome views are worth the effort. We had wild life (a deer crossed in front of us - close call) good Lunch Borsht and Smoked Salmon roll a ferry ride and ended up south of Kalso at Cedar Bay Campground. A lovely small camp of less than 25 sites. All sites were new with full service and a good mix of sun and shade. Great beach and fishing trail which I used to take advantage of my one day BC license - no luck but great time. Met a couple from Austria and another couple from Calgary who immigrated from Germany about 10 years ago. The Campground had a sign to pick your own spot and once set up the owner came to the site to sign us up and give us our garbage bag etc. Also gave us two books on the Kalso area - one for us and one for us to pass on and without asking recommended area restaurants and attractions. He was a great ambassador. This was one of our top sites if not the top on the trip to date. First back into site also and made it on one try. Cooked pork chops and fresh green beans for supper. For dessert Mary had sherbert right out of the container - I think she is learning to relax
