Mary and Keith's
Excellent Adventure
2003
July 2, 2003 - Sault Ste. Marie to Ney Provincial Park between Marathon and Terrace Bay
Once again slept in until 9:17 got up made coffee showered in KOA's showers - clean, hot and lots of pressure. Toast for breakfast and a leisurely put down and checkout including a purging of the 5vr at the dump station. Underway at 11:06 under sunny skies. Hwy 17 is interesting and varying terrain but after a while it is just more trees rocks and water. About the only thing that changes is the rocks themselves. Many different colours and textures from grey weathered to pink harsh edged and all colours and textures in between. Can't get over the ease with which the F150 handles the drive. Have long ago forgotten that we are even towing. We ran all day on 90 KM highway and our speed ranged from 80 to 110. We passed as many vehicles as passed us. Traffic was extremely light - both directions. The hills became steeper and longer the more we drove and it did eat up the gas - will have to calculate this later. Stopped in Wawa and drove into town (population 1000) went to Subway for lunch to go and ate it in the 5vr while parked at the tourist information site at the edge of town under the shadow of the famous Wawa Goose. (not nearly as large as I remember it from 1961. Also bought Gas in Wawa. Most expensive yet 79.9 per litre. Used the facilities and talked with the friendly attendants. Took a stroll on their scenic deck and then back in the car and on the road. Next stop was at an information booth near Marathon - attendants were more interested in each other than the guests - used facilities and on for the final 20 minutes to Ney Provincial Park. Checked in - bought firewood and got last pull through spot. Pull through but definitely not flat took 2 inch board to level side to side and although I left it hooked to truck for overnight had to pull the truck up with the jacks to get near to level. Still is is a pretty park - took a walk on the beach - covered with driftwood, which from the brochure is one of their trademarks. Very scenic. From what I read the island you can see is the one Lauren Harris depicted in my favorite Group of Seven painting and the one that I paraphrased in the painting that hangs at John and Katherine's house. We took a walk along the beach and then another to the comfort station - just exploring but while we were there we met a woman from Bracebridge. She and her husband (maybe kids?) are spending three weeks in park. In conversation it turns out that she has worked, for almost 30 years, at the Rockwell plant in Bracebridge (no longer Rockwell) anyway we had a pleasant three-way conversation. After our walk around we cooked ourselves a delicious potatoes, President's Choice Prime Rib Burgers and fresh veggies (red peppers, radishes, yellow peppers, tomatoes) supper. After supper we did the dishes and then Mary read while I took a long walk - stays light here until almost 11 o'clock. When I came back we played three games of cribbage and then Mary went to bed while I worked on this. As I wrap this up for the evening there is a gentle rain on the trailer but the rumble of thunder out over the lake. There have been some violent storms in the area hope this is not.
