Mary and Keith's
Excellent Adventure
2003
June 30, 2003 - Sudbury to Sault Ste. Marie
We both slept like logs last night. Got up and had toast - while Mary showered I went into Sudbury and bought Gas at Canadian Tire. Came back and broke camp. Bypassed Sudbury and headed for Sault Ste. Marie. It was a beautiful sunny perfectly clear sky day. Interesting drive across rolling country. Not much traffic and we had no problem keeping with the flow. Our home on wheels tows very easily. Drive proved interesting enough that we did not even have the radio or CD's playing. We debated visiting Elliot Lake as Ginette Kirkconnell is there with her mother visiting her sister. Decided against it as she has enough to cope with at present time. At the corner of the road to Elliot Lake (108) and the Transcanada there is a Deer Trail information building. We stopped to use the facilities and see what there was to learn. While we were stopped we took advantage of the time and the spot and had lunch in the 5vr. Comfortable easy and enjoyable. Took some pictures - orange flowers thought might be same as the ones in John and Kat's lawn - Indian Paintbrush but attendant did not think that was there name. Also took two pictures of the many deer statues at the site. Very realistic. Decided not to take the scenic deer trail route, as it would add another 2 or more hours on to the day. Phoned Bells Camp Site for reservation. Drove on to the SOO. Part way along a van passing honked and pointed at the trailer. I pulled over and checked, we had forgotten to put up the stairs after lunch. Again started to play the low gas game with no filling stations - I must learn to start filling up at about 1/2 tank. Finally long after the fuel light came on we reached a gas station. Filled up but my credit card was refused. Paid cash. Went on to the campground - actually drove past it and had to turn around. Drove in and it did not feel right so looked at the sites and went on. Actually when looking at the sites missed a turn and got landlocked but maneuvered across campsites and got out. Not having a good day in picking but coping. Phoned KOA and reserved site. Drove around Soo to KOA - drove past the road (told you I was not having a good day) got turned around and drove back. Registered and they gave us site 6. On the map it looked like the services were on the wrong side of the trailer so asked for another and they gave us site 10. Drove to site 10 (involved several tight turns - getting better at this maneuvering) pulled into site 9 turns out that Site 10 was serviced on the wrong side for us. Mary checked and 9 was reserved so back to site 6 - guess what it is perfect but had to back up twice to line up for the site - not a problem I am good. After setting up and relaxing for a few minutes I phoned about my credit card. Seems that their security software noticed an unusual pattern. Normally I do not use thi card for Gas and here I was buying gas in a consistent pattern moving away from my home base and it caused an alert. No problem they now know what is happening. I did not mind this at all as it shows they are on the ball looking out for our interest. After this we went to the grocery store and stocked up on items for meals and staples for the 5vr. Asked the wine clerk (staples?) for supper recommendations and got three. After returning to the trailer to store the purchases we went to North 82 one of hte recommended eateries. Excellent. We shared a Portabello mushroom and roaster red pepper appetizer, I had Chicken Rice Soup and Mary a salad to big to finish and then Mary had the whitefish catch of the day and I had a Italian Sausage and seasoned pork loin with pasta combo. We had water and coffee to drink total cost with $5.50 tip was only $47.00. After this we went to the Casino. Played until 11 PM at a $5 blackjack table Mary increased her personal wealth while I honored the true meaning of Charity Casino and donated. Fun night and we got back to the trailer by 11:30. Tomorrow is Canada Day and we intend to tour here and take part in whatever celebrations they have planned.
